N26 Account Opening Step by Step

Opening an N26 account is fully digital and takes under 10 minutes. Here I show you exactly how it works and what to watch out for.

Step 1: Download the app

Download the N26 app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). The app is free. You need a smartphone with a current operating system - older devices may not be supported.

Step 2: Enter personal details

Enter your name, address and date of birth. Important: the details must match your ID document exactly. You also need an email address and phone number that are not already registered with another N26 account.

Step 3: Verify identity (Video-Ident)

N26 verifies your identity via video-ident directly in the app. You need your national ID card or passport and a stable internet connection. An agent guides you through the process - it takes about 5 minutes. Have your ID ready and make sure you have good lighting.

Step 4: Choose your account plan

After verification, you choose your account plan: Standard (free), Smart (4.90 EUR/mo), You (9.90 EUR/mo) or Metal (16.90 EUR/mo). You can upgrade or downgrade at any time. When in doubt, start with Standard - you won't miss anything and can always switch later.

Step 5: Activate card and get started

Your virtual debit card is ready to use immediately. You can add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay right away and pay contactlessly. You also receive your IBAN instantly - you can set up transfers and standing orders straight away. If you ordered a physical card, it typically arrives within 5 working days by post.

Tips from my own experience

Do the video-ident during the day - waiting times are shorter than in the evening. Have your ID ready and sit in a well-lit spot. If video-ident doesn't work, N26 also offers verification at a post office. And one more tip: set up Spaces right away if you have Smart or higher. It helps enormously with saving.
