Which N26 account is right for you?
N26 offers four different account plans. At first glance, that can be confusing. I looked at all of them and summarised who each one makes the most sense for.
Students and trainees: Standard (free)
If you don't have a regular income yet or simply want a free account, the Standard plan is enough. You get a virtual debit card immediately, can withdraw cash 3 times per month for free, and pay zero account fees. The physical card costs a one-time 10 EUR - but you can skip it if you pay with your phone anyway.
Professionals with savings goals: Smart (4.90 EUR/mo)
If you want to split your salary into structured categories, Spaces are the key feature. These are sub-accounts where you can automatically transfer money via standing order. One Space for rent, one for holidays, one as an emergency fund. Plus 5 free withdrawals per month and a coloured debit card. For under 5 EUR a month, a solid solution for anyone wanting to organise their finances.
Frequent travellers and digital nomads: You (9.90 EUR/mo)
The key advantage of You over Smart: you pay worldwide in any currency for free. No more 1.7% foreign currency fee. On top of that, you get travel insurance and theft protection from Allianz. If you regularly spend time abroad - for work or holidays - You quickly saves you more than the monthly 9.90 EUR.
For those who want the maximum: Metal (16.90 EUR/mo)
Metal offers everything You has, plus 8 instead of 5 free withdrawals, an extended insurance package, and a stainless steel metal card. Plus priority support in case something goes wrong. Worth it mainly if you frequently need cash and value premium insurance coverage.
My recommendation
For most people, the free Standard account or Smart is more than enough. You only makes sense if you regularly pay abroad. Metal is a premium product for those who consciously want the full package. My tip: start with Standard and upgrade later if you notice you need more.
